How do you make a website?

Wed Feb 11, 2009, 12:12 PM
 • Mood: Artistic
 • Listening to: The TV
 • Reading: This screen
 • Watching: Steve Wilkos
And many, many other questions. Explanation time! :XD:

So I came up with a little idea for a website and magazine geared towards the furry fandom. I've just got basic ideas right now. Like what I want the magazine and site to be about, what I want on the site, and what the target audience is (in general it's the entire furry subculture, but unlike a lot of furry related magazines/publications, there's gonna be no adult content...there's already enough of that and there isn't enough for the people who aren't into that or are young). I asked a little on FA about it and got some feedback on the idea. Because I wrote it up already I guess I'll just put the link to my FA journal about it:

So basically if I want this thing to work, I'd need a lot of help on a lot of different aspects. Since I go to an art school, I can always meet up with writers, photographers, and graphic designers. But I wouldn't mind help from any graphic designers on here. But I've got a ton of questions...might as well number it:

1) How do you make a website? And would anyone be willing to help me out or walk me though some things? I'm not very tech savvy...
2) Would anyone be willing to help me design a site or help me learn some basics of graphic design?
3) For people who do have their own websites, what are some good sites to host on? I'm looking to make a site that looks professional because I want this to act as a business of sorts...that is once I get the magazine going. Would take a good number of years obviously.
4) If you read the journal I posted above, what do you think needs to be added, or taken away.
5) I know the magazine aspect wouldn't be started for quite a while, but part of the website would be a preview of the magazine. Might put some mock pages up there so people could see what they were getting before they bought it. But I have no knowledge of magazine design either. That also ties into the graphic design thing, and that's another thing I'm gonna need a lot of help with.

Um...that's all the questions I can think of right now...even though that last one totally isn't a question but rather a general statement of "how do you make a magazine?" 'er something like that...

How do you make a website? Now a days you have two choices, you either build it from scratch or you use a blog or content manager and modify that to do what you need.

If you know little about websites and only plan on making an information site, you can build it from scratch easily enough. However if you're looking for a Community site with options such as user accounts, comments, and forums, you may want to look into a content manager such as Joomla or Drupal, as this can give you the interface and functionality you need right off the bat. You can also create a site with Wordpress, though I wouldn't use this unless you plan on having a site that updates frequently, for a static informational site, it's too much.

Also, I highly suggest learning CSS, it is awesome and you'll need it for designing layouts for websites.

I'm aiming to build on from scratch.

I do want to the site to have a community aspect with a forum. I don't really want the user accounts outside of the forums because I don't think there would be a point to it. But I'll look up Joomla and Drupal just in case I change my mind.

That site will be extremely helpful...a lot to read...but extremely helpful. Thanks! :D

Writing a community based website from scratch requires advanced knowledge of PHP and SQL, not to mention HTML/CSS and Javascript for the website itself. If your only including a forum with user accounts on that forum, it will limit comments to forums, but you can just plug in something like SMF with a custom theme and that will do the job nicely. The problem with Joomla! and all the other content management systems is that they are huge and very bulky, but they work.

Professional looking websites are ones that have a very clean design - it should look nice, but it should make good use of screen space and be able to relay information effectively as well as be easy to browse. It's important to make things very obvious so the user doesn't have to go searching for them.

I will be designing my own website here in the future for my own purposes, with some very advanced user login features designed to integrate into other websites, but unfortunately right now I have no time to be of any help.

Yeah. A full community site looks very difficult to create. And with the site armania showed me above, there's a ton of useful information on HTML and CSS that I'm gonna do my best to learn it all. All I know for sure is I want to have a forum. I don't think it would be necessary to make it a full community thing with separate user accounts and such.

As for the design, I'm gonna base it off my personal preferences when it comes to professional sites. I like sites that are easy to navigate and where everything can easily be found, so I assume most people like easy to navigate sites. I've been on sites that look smooth and nice, and for the most part they are a little easy to navigate, but when I go to look for specifics, it's hard to find stuff. Or just the opposite, there are sites that have little to no information about their group, product, etc. I'm probably gonna seek the help of graphic designers when it comes to a color scheme...

You may want to find a programmer who can write the backend for you, too. HTML/CSS is one thing, but PHP is a full-fledged programming language. Again, I'd offer to help, but if there's one thing about time, its that there's never enough of it.

I have a feeling I'm gonna find someone to help me out. It's a lot to say I'm gonna do it all by myself, but I do want to learn something about all these different things so I can help with the upkeep of the site as well.

There's never enough time...I know. ^^;

You should just put that its for a general audience, the stuff that you put in the parenthesis sounded a bit too broad. :/

BUT ANYWAY ONTO THE POINT!
I take commercial art technology, I'm pretty good when it comes to design. (my class has to design magazine covers and yearbook pages etc.) I am quite good at coming up w/ ideas of magazine page layouts. :)
And you dont REALLY need to be all serious when it comes to designing a website layout, it can be simple, but enough to let it retain the professional look. I'm only decent at HTML, but blank at CSS and any other programming, I'm still practicing. (I have to if I want to become a game designer anyway).

I think this is all a good idea though. And I wont mind helping out in anything if you...need it.
:iconsombrastudio:
True...I could've just said it's for a general audience 'cause that's what I meant...I just wrote way too much...ah well, I just thought of this idea yesterday. :XD:

Ooh, can you give me some basic HTML tips? I tried learning it when I was in highschool (or middle school...don't remember) 'cause I wanted to make some random fansite, but I've forgotten what I've learned since then. I don't want it to be so super detailed and crazy that I wouldn't be able to figure out what I'm doing, but I do want it to have a nice layout that's a mixture of professional and fun looking and easy to navigate. And a message board...site needs message board...:XD:
